Why is it that one of the most enjoyable things to do with Facebook is to whittle your time away doing pretty much nothing?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge Facebook fan. It and Linked In have enabled me to get in touch with reams of friends and acquaintances who had drifted off as I (and they) moved around in both a geographical and a job sense. One of the most useful apps is the status, as I can, at the drop of a hat, see and respond to my friends’ emotional or intellectual wellbeing. Rather like being next to them. Mind you, as my other half says, “why not pick up the phone or go and see them?” That would probably be better…
