I was trawling through some old files earlier today and came across…

…two sites that I had forgotten about: AdBusters and the Anti-Advertising Agency.

It may seem weird for someone who has spent the past decade working in advertising to focus on sites that parody the very work we create, but I think there is an honest idea here: our day to day work is so obsessed with creating innovative and engaging advertising, that we often fail to stop and consider the impact of our work.

I’ve attached one which I find especially poignant.

How does it go again? “I’ll tell you the problem with the power that you’re using here: it didn’t require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn’t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don’t take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you’re selling it
