Friday last week marked an historic achievement – the transmission of images via holography over long distance (see the recent Torygraph article).

OK. so the use of holography isn’t that new. For a while. HP has been looking into holographic data storage (and strugglng to develop a commercially viable application). And even good ol Prince Charlie had a go at the recent Climate Conference. But until now, live bidirectional holography wasn’t commercialy possible or viable. And OK, so this currently costs c£35K, but given the current state of technological development, I’m wondering how long it will be before this is a facility that all phones are developed with.

And how long before some smart alec develops the Star Trek Holodeck? Now that WOULD be cool…
